Add a dazzling touch to your future embroidery projects with Mylar Magic! Rather than using metallic embroidery thread, using mylar is a more affordable alternative that also adds a glitter like appearance.

Mylar is a shiny plastic film placed into a mylar embroidery design partway through the sewing process. It works with any color of embroidery thread. Given its reflective nature, using a piece of mylar allows much more light to reflect off your embroidery designs and gives it a beautiful sparkly sheen that draws the eye.

  • Receive 20 sheets. Each sheet is 18″ x 30″ and can be used to embroider multiple designs.
  • When embroidering laundered items with mylar, don’t put the finished item in the dryer on high heat. Although laundering, in general, shouldn’t cause issues (except the normal wear in tear).
  • The beautiful thing about using mylar is that in terms of color, it has a 1 size fits all approach. You don’t have to buy separate colors of mylar, instead, mylar picks up whatever color of thread you’re using on top of it!

Use Mylar Specific Embroidery Designs:

Mylar embroidery designs are digitized with a thinner density specifically for the thin film of mylar to be added underneath the fill areas & allow light to penetrate between the stitches & create a beautiful glitter like effect. Much like an applique design as well, digitizing mylar requires a tack down running stitch to hold the material in place.

That being said, you can embroider mylar embroidery designs without inserting a sheet of mylar however you can not embroider a regular embroidery design with a piece of mylar.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Will Mylar melt under a heat press?

A: Yes. We suggest using a Teflon sheet over the Mylar so it does not come in direct contact with an iron or heat press.

Q: How do you adjust density for mylar using embroidery software?

A: Go into “fill” in your software and change the spacing from 0.4 to 1.2mm. Turn of the “travel on edge” so there is no underlay as well.

Q: What thickness of Mylar should I use?

A: Our Mylar is very sheer and thin, perfect for machine embroidery. It tears off easily. We suggest using painter’s tape to hold it in place.
